The Kalahari Arts & Heritage Festival gears up for the 3rd Edition

13 December 2023

The 3rd annual Kalahari Arts & Heritage Festival (KAHF) comes to life once again at the peak of summer in January 2024. The Kalahari is often subject to myth, mystery and mischaracterisation. So as the inhabitants of the Kalahari, the Khoi and San and their way of life. KAHF is changing that narrative.

Over the last two editions, the festival has told the stories, culture, customs of the Khoi and San through song, dance, art exhibitions, film screenings and workshops.

The KAHF will take place from the 24 – 27 January 2024 in Philandersbron, Kalahari Desert in the Northern Cape Province. This is an initiative of the Africa Human Rights Film Festival whose objective is to use arts to generate robust debate, empower citizens, raise awareness and promote the respect for human rights in marginalized communities.

The KAHF has become an annual event, everyone looks forward to in the Kalahari, as it brings various communities together from the Northern Cape – South Africa, Botswana and Namibia, and lets them showcase their talents through song, dance and other great experiences and initiatives.

“We are thrilled that this festival is becoming a cultural benchmark for the Khoi and San,” said Helena Steenkamp, KAHF Festival Director. “KAHF is not only a platform for exhibiting and retaining the Khoi and San culture but a living memory and archive for where humanity comes from,” added Steenkamp.

The four day programme will be made up of two days of workshops, training, activations and rehearsals in Andriesvale and Askham on the 24th and 25th of January, to consolidate what the artistes have learnt over the years.

The 26th will be made up of a school program outreach, panel discussions, rehearsals and bonfire storytelling in Askham. Wrapping up on the 27th with festival performances, dance, poetry, music, photo exhibitions, cultural cuisines, language masterclasses, and film screenings in Philanderson.

The whole programme will attract participants from Platfontein, Loubos, Rietfontein, Mier, Andriesvale, Askham, Botswana and Namibia.
